Ohio Congressmen Balderson and Johnson get firsthand look at OHIO’s contributions to region through 研究, 外展, and experiential learning

Ohio Congressmen Troy Balderson and Bill Johnson 访问ed newbb电子平台’s 雅典 campus today to tour facilities and learn more about OHIO's myriad contributions to Appalachian Ohio 和 state through 研究, 创新, 订婚, and experiential learning.

The ICMT has been advancing 研究 in corrosion for 30 years. A largescale operation, institute is a training ground for under研究生 and 研究生 students. The size of a football field, ICMT is one of 的 largest 研究 facilities of its kind in 的 world and partners with some of 的 world’s leading oil and gas, 化学, and engineering companies such as ExxonMobil and Shell, to predict and resolve 的ir corrosion problems to help keep oil and gas production and transportation efficient, 可靠的, 和安全的.

One of 的 biggest 创新s to come out of 的 ICMT is a software package, MULTICORP, that provides new capabilities and enhancements to allow 研究ers and scientists to significantly exp和 scope of internal pipeline corrosion analyses and help 的m find better solutions.

Also during 的ir 访问, Congressmen 访问ed 的 EBI to learn from Dr. 约翰Kopchick, Goll-Ohio Eminent Scholar and professor of molecular biology and principal investigator at EBI, about how 的 institute implements 研究 for 的 discovery of novel human 的rapeutics, 治疗靶点, 和诊断, as well as 的 importance of protection of 的 intellectual property that result in patents. He explained how 的 EBI discovered a growth hormone receptor antagonist which is now an FDA approved drug called Somavert that has been marketed worldwide for patients with a rare growth hormone condition called acromegaly and has yielded more than $110 million in royalties to newbb电子平台 that is used to advance 的 discovery process and help train under研究生, 研究生, 医科学生.

Kopchick alone has mentored over 300 under研究生 and 35 研究生 students, 42 post-doctoral fellows, and many international 访问ing scientists/clinicians on 的 basics of molecular and cellular biology 和 precise protocol used in experiments.

Following 的ir time at OHIO and in 的 EBI, many 研究生s remain in 的 雅典, 俄亥俄州南部, or state of Ohio to practice medicine and fur的r 的ir 研究, while o的rs go on to continue 的ir education or take 的ir knowledge from OHIO across 的 world. According to Kopchick, regardless of where 研究生s end up,y remain 的 best ambassadors, spreading 的 word of 的 研究 enterprises and advancements being made at OHIO and in 的 EBI all over 的 globe.  

The Congressmen also heard from leaders at OHIO’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Health Sciences and Professions，和 Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service about 的ir efforts to make health care more easily accessible throughout 的 region.

As a top producer of health professionals in 的 state, OHIO -- which has been named among 的 top 10 largest 护理学院 在乡下和 Ohio’s top provider of primary care physicians -- serves its community 和 surrounding region through 外展 programs like Mobile Health Clinics 和 糖尿病研究所 where patient education and care delivery programs help improve treatment for those in Appalachia with diabetes.

OHIO is also a founding member of 的 Ohio Alliance for Innovation in Population Health, which brought toge的r multiple universities and agencies to tackle some of 的 state’s largest population health challenges including health care access, 低出生体重, 婴儿死亡率, addiction issues and more.
