Dr. 黑色的 is an engaged communication scholar who is dedicated to democracy 和 community. She uses qualitative 和 discourse-based methods to conduct research that helps groups address difficult, divisive issues through collaboration, dialogue, 和 deliberation. Dr. 黑色的’s scholarship focuses on three overarching questions: How do groups discursively construct community 和 difference? How do communication practices enable 和 constrain group members’ efforts to address difficult collective problems? How can communication be designed to challenge oppressive structures 和 promote ethical decision making in diverse groups? Dr. 黑色的 is the past editor of the Journal of Deliberative Democracy, one of the founding officers of the National Communication Association’s Public Dialogue 和 Deliberation Division, 和 a member of Democracy R&D, an international network of deliberative scholars 和 practitioners. Dr. 黑色的 frequently collaborates with community partners to help underst和 和 improve community dialogue 和 decision-making processes. Locally, Dr. 黑色的 facilitates community groups through the 雅典 Art of Hosting Group. She is active in the Racial Equity Coalition of 雅典, 和 the 雅典 Community Relations Commission, which promote diversity 和 inclusion initiatives in the local community. She also leads workshops related to communication, leadership, 和 group facilitation for Leadership 雅典 County 和 the Voinovich Academy. In addition, Dr. 劳拉 黑色的 partnered with the 雅典 Foundation to facilitate a year-long planning process to help the 雅典 City Schools. She also leads community conversations about diversity 和 inclusion.
Dr. 黑色的 teaches courses in group communication, organizational communication, leadership, community engagement, public deliberation 和 dialogue, qualitative research methods, 和 discourse analysis. She is the course coordinator for COMS 2050, Techniques of Group Discussion.
