The program’s small seminars, which consist of both M.A. 和Ph值.D. 学生, provide a friendly and supportive atmosphere, with 学生 receiving ample personal attention. 从2022年开始, doctoral 学生 will take six courses in 修辞 and 作文, including seminars and teaching apprenticeships. Master's 学生 take four seminars in 修辞 and 作文.
修辞 & 作文 学生 also take classes in critical theory, literary 历史, and creative writing.
In addition, all 英语系 graduate 学生 take classes across 英语 studies.
Many 学生 also earn certificates in 女性、性别、 & 性研究 或TESOL.
Teaching Assistantships
几乎所有的修辞 & 作文 graduate 学生 receive funding in the form of teaching assistantships, with additional fellowships available for select doctoral 学生. newbb电子平台 has a tiered composition program in which undergraduates take a first-year composition course followed by an advanced composition course in the junior or senior year. All TAs begin their careers by teaching ENG 1510 using a curriculum. TAs also have the opportunity to teach advanced composition courses, including Women and Writing, Writing and 修辞 II, Professional Writing and 修辞, and Writing about Sustainability.
Professional Development
The program offers teaching associates a variety of teaching and related professional development opportunities. Advanced TAs have the opportunity to develop their administrative abilities as Assistant Director of 作文 or Assistant Director of the Student Writing Center. Writing tutoring positions also may be available.

修辞 & Ph值组成.D. 考试顺序
修辞 & Ph值组成.D. process takes 学生 through a structured program to insure that they are prepared for participation in the broader community of 修辞 & 作文 on a national and, increasingly, international scale. For this reason we have three examinations:
- 首先是书面的, comprehensive exam that faculty recommend 学生 take at the beginning of the third year, but must be taken by the beginning of the fourth year. This exam asks 学生 to read and synthesize one decade of three different professional journals. Students then write three essays tracing the development of an important issue through each one of the journals.
- Second is an oral exam on the dissertation prospectus that must be taken within six months of the written exam.
- The final exam is an oral defense of the student’s dissertation.
